Sarah Palin’s list

lectures: 508

I don’t assume that Palin is after the murder of, so far, 6 people in Arizona. Nothing farther. But there are consequences of violent commercials made by elected (and then reliable) persons. Those banners are the perfect stimulation for crazy and violent people. As Giffords said in March 2010, there are consequences of this kind of jokes (see video below). Llegeix més »

Blind shopping

lectures: 360

In the US the consumerism is radical. And the institutional image is totally proud about this fact. I agree with all those people that truly believe in a social model. I also consider that a worthy future for California and the US must be based on public education, a high quality public health care system, local products, small shops and reinforcing the idea of sharing and the idea of save instead of waste. In San Francisco Bay Area, there are a bunch of places where this is a priority. I’m impressed with those communities because is not easy being aware of the problems of the economical liberalism in a short term. And capitalism plays in the short term scale with the help of the corrupted political system voted every 4 years.

In this article I want to talk about a detail of the economical liberalism in the Bay Area. In fact it is so little that not everybody had though about: prices. Llegeix més »

US «Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor» focuses on Spanish situation in the Catalan Countries

lectures: 688

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor of the US Department of State published in March 2010 the «2009 Human Rights Report: Spain». In this report, they list an extent number of issues occurred during 2009 in Spain. There are a couple of paragraphs focusing on language issues. Despite of the reality demonstrates that the problems with Spanish in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands are rare and there is a misuse of Catalan in both territories, and the situation of Catalan in Valencia is much worst. They only reference the issues against the Spanish language and they do not say a single word about the non accomplishment of the linguistic policies to improve the situation of Catalan language in the Catalan Countries.

Ref: «The controversy regarding official language policies continued, with complaints that current policies offend the right to an education in the «mother tongue,» or Castilian Spanish. In 2007 the ombudsman received approximately 100 complaints regarding Catalonia’s linguistic policies, and in March 2008 the NGO Platform in Defense of the Freedom of Choice in Language Election filed a formal complaint against a school in the Basque Country. The school had refused to offer all classes in Spanish.
In April, 39 doctors at the sole hospital on Ibiza (one of the Balearic Islands) announced their decision to leave their jobs due to a new requirement that doctors be tested for fluency in Catalan. The decree, approved by the Balearic government on March 27, requires that doctors working in public service speak Catalan and provides a window of three years for them to learn it. The doctors’ union asserted that the requirement was not for public benefit but rather the result of a «political obsession.» In response to the decree, 2,500 persons participated in a demonstration protesting the Catalan language requirement.
According to security forces, 4,000 persons participated in a demonstration in Barcelona in September 2008 to protest the government’s linguistic policies and to defend the right to have school classes taught in Castilian.»
